The reverse side of the disk was polished to a mirror brightness. A number of unfamiliar, jewellike components were built into both handle and disk, including what looked like the smallest power cell Luke had ever seen. Above this small post was a circular metal disk barely larger in diameter than his spread palm. It consisted primarily of a short, thick handgrip with a couple of small switches set into the grip. Obi Wan has just given Luke his father's old lightsaber: I recently reread the Novelization of Episode IV (fun fact: the novel came out in 1976), and I came across this passage which strikes me as relevant. Guess he changed his mind for the prequels, but when all the characters are using the Force, I guess you don't need to have the best physical grip. There's some old interview footage with Mark Hamill saying that Lucas insisted that the fighting style in the OT be like old medieval knights with swords you had to lift with two hands, King Arthur style. They have the display hilts which are the nice looking ones that just hang on the belt or get handed between characters in close up, and then they have the functional stunt hilts which are basically just tubes painted with the grips and buttons, so it was easier to grip during the fight scenes. I saw some prop hilts at the recent SW costume exhibit in NYC. The look stuck because lightsabers became instantly iconic, and since apparently lightsaber-making knowledge was pretty much lost by the time ANH takes place, the design needed to extend back in time to the prequels. (Careful, some TFA thing autoplays on the page) The original prop hilts were made with existing lighting equipment cobbled together because the ANH production didn't have enough budget to custom make them. ||| Join our Discord! ||| Question?
